We leave Marrakech after breakfast and drive to Imi Oughlad (1,450m). The Jbel Toubkal (4,167m) the highest peak in North Africa, Aglzim (3,650m) and Aksoual (3,884m) will loom before you.
Here you meet our mule team where your gear is loaded. Then you begin walking along the valley in a north-westerly direction for a 2 hour acclimatisation trek passing cornfields, pine woods and juniper to the Tiz n’tachete (2,000m). Look back down on the Imlil and Ait Oussaden valleys before carrying on for another half hour to Imi n’ifri. Rest for a picnic before embarking on a slow hike for 2.5 hrs south-west down along a dirt track to Assif n’ Ait Oussaden and the famous red clay terraced village of Tiziane (1,750m). Your accommodation will either be in a Berber house or mobile camp (depending of the season).
Approximately 5 hours of walking will be encountered in your first day of trekking.
After breakfast hike up along the Assif n’ait Oussaden valley passing through the walnut groves up to Tizi n’Touti (1,995m) and through to a rare almost flat stretch arriving at Assaka Spring. Here you will stop for a picnic with the sound of silence surrounding you. After lunch head off on a relatively easy trail for 2.5hrs along the edges of a forest until you reach the Berber village of D’knt (1,870m). Your accommodation will either be in a Berber house or carry on to Agouns to camp (depending of the season).
Approximately 5 hours of walking will be encountered in your second day of trekking.
After breakfast hike for 4 hrs past groves of walnut trees, fields of corn and barley. Along the way you will be greeted by many sheep and goat herders. Witness women and children bent over with 20kg loads of dried herbs. A descent amongst the juniper trees will lead you to a small spring. At this tranquil spot you will enjoy a picnic amongst the trees. After lunch proceed along a narrow path for 3 hrs leading you to the valley of Assif n’ait Oussaden. From here enter the village of Tizi Oussem (1,850m) then up to the summer village of Tamsoult to camp.
Approximately 7 hours of walking will be encountered in your third day of trekking.
After breakfast you set out on an easterly direction for a moderately difficult hike following winding mule tracks to Tizi Aguelzim (3,550m). A further 3 hrs south-east to the Toubkal Refuge marks the spring snowline (3,207m). Your accommodation will be mobile camping for the evening.
Approximately 4 hours of walking will be encountered in your fourth day of trekking.
After an early breakfast around 6am, start a 3 hr steep climb to the highest peak in the Maghreb (4,167m). The view from the Maghreb is awe-inspiring. From here take the Ikkhibi Sud or South Circuit for a 2 to 3 hour descent back to the refuge for a refreshing picnic. The trail continues down to Imlil where you will overnight at a guesthouse.
