The Zanzibar Archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean 15 miles off the coast of Tanzania, is a breath taking destination and escape from the world. You’ll enjoy clear, turquoise-blue water; shallow sandbars perfect for wading; and many small, nearly deserted islands virtually unvisited by tourists.
Explore the World Heritage Site of Stone Town, Zanzibar City’s old quarter. Or just go beach to beach between tiny fishing villages—each one’s better than the next.
This tour is for photographers and non-photographers. We welcome beginners, amateurs, semi-pro and pro photographers, DLSRM, mirrorless, compact or iPhone cameras. During our trip of the island, we will learn how to incorporate lighting conditions to create dramatic photos.
How to capture the atmosphere of a particular scene and how to compose a photograph to get the maximum effect. We will learn some basic principles in Light Room for post processing and general discussions about our day to day photography.

Tropical Zanzibar – the magical spice islands just 25 minutes from mainland Tanzania. Fly-in or take a ferry, this Photographic Safari starts in Stone Town. The airport is located a quick ten minute taxi ride from Stone Town. The first night and last night of the tour is spent at your hotel in Stone Town. The hotel features a beautiful swimming pool and is walking distance to all the historical and cultural sites. The five days in between are spent on the East Coast, with Barefoot Beach house www.villazanzibar.net as your base for exploration. A luxurious private villa set on a white sandy beach, with a dedicated Chef to spoil and delight!
For 7 days you will be exploring Zanzibar, photographing its hidden gems. Transportation arranged in an airconditioned minibus with your English speaking guide and Solly Levi to ensure the ultimate photographic experience for all. Photographers of all levels are welcome on this exploration Safari. After each day out, guests will gather with Solly and he will offer one-on-one tutorship, assist with image downloads, photo reviews and offer professional guidance in an informal and relaxed setting where each person gets to share and discuss their images.

Day One: Stone Town, Darajani Market.
After an early coffee and breakfast, we meet in the hotel lobby at 9am, begin our first day of the photo workshop. Today, we walk around Stone Town where we will have photo opportunities on every corner and each location we visit. We will visit the Darajani Historical Market, the Palace Museum, the elaborately carved wooden doors of Stone Town (cultural roots of Zanzibar), The House of Wonder at Forodhani Gardens and the slave market. We will stop for Lunch (own account) and refreshments at Zanzibar Coffee house.

Day Two: The Rock, Michamvi Sunset
Early breakfast and check out, we had head for the coast and check in to the Villa, where you will be based for the next five nights. The East Coast always makes for the best early morning sunrise photography, so during the next five days, guests are encouraged to take an early morning coffee on the terrace and soak up the magnificent views before days’ events. The scenery will be different every day as will the shades of blue. Light Lunch at the Villa served by Chef, then we head to The Rock for a photography and sunset photo session on the beach, Michamvi.

Day Three: Mnemba Atoll
Off to Mnemba Atoll we go! What an adventure this will be. Set in a Marine National Park, the Mnemba Atoll can only be reached by boat. With an abundance of marine life and crystal clear waters, Mnemba is the perfect location for swimming, snorkeling and underwater photography. Time to take out the GoPro! Here, we will shoot underwater and learn about the over/under water photography. In the afternoon we will walk towards the light house. We will also do some drone photography around the pier on the west side of the island.

Day Four: Bwejuu Village Tour
Before breakfast and totally tide dependent, we take a walk to visit the Seaweed farmers further down the beach. Our local guide Haji will introduce you to the local seaweed farmers who tend their ocean plantations. This is a great moment for photographing these iconic women. Please note – we always ask permission before taking a portrait. After breakfast, we explore our local village, Bwejuu on foot. It is important to support our local community and we visit the school that was built in 1966. Guests are welcome to make a donation or bring some much needed stationery to be handed to the School Principal. We enjoy a village walk and say hallo to the locals. We are invited to a local village home for tea and snacks. We will enjoy the hospitality of Sabiyeh and maybe even get a henna tattoo. In the evening, Chef prepares a traditional Swahili Buffet.

Day Five: Natural Zanzibar
We explore the natural beauty of Zanzibar! After breakfast, we head off to Jozani forest to meet the infamous and indigenous red Colobus monkeys! We take a guided tour of the mangrove forest. Near the village of Bungi, covered in a canopy of mango trees, one finds the palatial ruins of a mansion built by Bi. (meaning Lady) Khole, a rebel princess who never married or had children and ran her own clove business. Walking through the sun-soaked ruins of Khole’s 19th century coral-rock mansion conjures up the grandeur and power of Zanzibar’s royal past. Afternoon at your leisure.

Day Six: Explore the Beaches of Zanzibar – Nungwi
After an early breakfast we head towards Nungwi at the north of the island. This is one of the best beaches on the island. We will be take advantage of the tides on the west part of Nungwi to photograph its changing landscape. We will also walk around the local villages to capture daily life in Zanzibar.

Day Seven: Spice Tour, Stone Town
After another delicious home made breakfast, we leave the villa, say our farewells to the Chef and team. We depart the East Coast and head North to the Spice farms. Here we engage with locals and get to see, touch, smell and taste Zanzibar spices. Our guide teaches us about the medicinal and culinary benefits of cloves, nutmeg, coconut, black pepper in a very entertaining fashion. It is a fun morning out and a great opportunity to meet locals in an engaging light hearted manner. We head to Stone Town a last walk around the town to do some last minute shopping and take the opportunity to capture this beautiful place, one last time. Overnight in Stone town. Farewell drinks and Dinner at Emerson Spice rooftop restaurant (own account).
Day Eight: End of Workshop
After breakfast, guest check out and departure. End of Workshop.
