ALPHONSE ISLANDS, SEYCHELLES, GUIDED FLY-FISHING RETREAT
Of all the world’s tropical islands, the Alphonse group of atolls is considered one of the best destinations for fly-fishing. This is due to the expansive white sand flats surrounding this trio of islands – 10 000 acres of it to be exact. It’s a spectacular slice of tropical wilderness providing perfect conditions for wading and sight-fishing. If ever there is a destination made for both the fly-fishing enthusiast and beginner, it is Alphonse.
Being home to one of the most prolific Bonefish fisheries in the world makes this week-long dedication to one of the world’s most elegant sports a chance of a lifetime. Apart from bonefish, Alphonse also hosts three types of Triggerfish, Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper, Permit, Parrotfish, eight species of Trevalley (including the Giant Trevally) and the incomparable Milkfish.
To make this an all-round retreat, Alphonse has a stringent conservation policy and active sustainability practice in place to allow for a long future of mindful fishing practices. Only 12 fly-anglers are allowed in the St. Francois fishery at a time in order to nourish the population. Conservation donations provide local conservation experts the means to do continued research and maintenance.
Guests are collected at Mahé Island in the Seychelles and transported by domestic flight to the small airstrip on Alphonse Island. From here they’re escorted to their bungalow or suite and allowed the opportunity to settle in while enjoying welcome drinks and snacks and familiarizing themselves with the eco-fishing principles of Alphonse.
The remaining seven days are spent on daily fly-fishing excursions on either one of the three islands in the atoll. Equipment is provided, and purpose-built skiffs provide the most comfortable opportunity for learning, practicing, and professional fishing. Having a full week to fish means the chance to fish a variety of world-renowned species. Every day offers a new challenge. Lunch packs, refreshing drinks and snacks are always on hand to allow guests extended time in the water in order to perfect their technique or accomplish their bucket-list catch.
Time not spent fly-fishing can be spent lazing on the white beaches, exploring the indigenous forest or tucking into three delicious, locally prepared meals a day surrounded by incredible nature.
