The famous travel writer, AA Gill once said, “Vamizi is a pearl in a thousand miles of crushed shell”. Slender and crescent-shaped, Vamizi Island nestles within the Quirimbas Archipelago, a string of islands along the length of Mozambique’s remote northern coast. The island is a sanctuary, small and intimate, offering the definitive barefoot luxury of your own private island.

Of all Vamizi’s attractions, its beaches are undeniably one of its greatest, especially as the Lodge and Private Villas are strung loosely along them. At times the sea can be so mirror calm that the silence of a beachcombing walk is not even punctuated by the sound of waves.

Yet, despite being located in one of the wildest places on earth, in these calm, cyclone free waters, Vamizi offers the definitive experience of the exquisite luxury expected from such a trip to Africa.

Exclusivity is one of Vamizi Island’s greatest assets and each of the ten villas (known locally as kitalas) amply commands its own part of the beach. The kitalas are airy and generous with a minimum of 170sqm of timbered floor space. The cooling sea breezes and lack of mosquitos obviate the need for air conditioning.

Each kitala is stylishly furnished with an open sitting room, a private decking area with sun loungers, an elegant bedroom with rattan-screen walls and folding doors, and a huge bathroom with a large marble walk-in shower and exquisitely carved lattice windows. No televisions or music systems disturb the sound of birdsong and sea. There are three types of kitala – Luxury, Double Luxury and Luxury Family.

On Vamizi there is no fixed itinerary. The relaxed nature of the island encourages you to spend every day exactly how you like without planning ahead further than 24 hours.

The dives here have been said to be some of the best in the world and the deep sea fishing is exquisite. Other iconic activities include snorkelling trips, castaway picnics, whale watching expeditions, kayak trips up the estuary, traditional dhow sunset cruises, nature walks, community visits and miles of miles of endless beach to explore on foot.
